What to Look for in a Waterproof Cot Sheet
Between leaking nappies, spilled bottles, dribble, sickness and the general unpredictability of having a little one, cot mattresses go through a lot.
A waterproof cot sheet can make life much easier — but not all waterproof bedding is created equal.
Some options require a separate mattress protector underneath. Others can feel stiff, noisy or plasticky. And when you're choosing something your little one is going to sleep directly on every night, comfort matters just as much as practicality.
So, what should you actually look for in a waterproof cot sheet?
Here are the things we think matter most.
1. Waterproof protection that's actually built in
First things first: check what the product actually means by "waterproof."
Some cot sheets are simply regular fitted sheets designed to be used over a separate waterproof mattress protector.
A waterproof fitted cot sheet, on the other hand, has waterproof protection built directly into the sheet.
That means instead of:
Mattress → mattress protector → fitted sheet
You can have:
Mattress → waterproof fitted sheet
One product. One layer. One less thing to remove when there's an accident in the middle of the night.
It's exactly why we created NUMI's waterproof cot sheets.
2. A soft sleeping surface
Waterproof shouldn't mean plasticky.
Your little one spends a lot of time in their cot, so pay attention to the fabric they'll actually be sleeping on.
We wanted NUMI sheets to look and feel like beautiful children's bedding first — with the waterproof part quietly doing its job underneath.
That's why our sheets use 300 thread count GOTS-certified organic cotton combined with a waterproof TPU layer.
The result? A soft cotton sleeping surface with waterproof protection built in.
3. Breathable waterproofing
Waterproofing doesn't have to mean wrapping a mattress in thick plastic.
Look at what creates the waterproof barrier.
NUMI uses TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane), a thin waterproof membrane that provides a barrier against liquid while remaining flexible and breathable.
It also helps us avoid that stiff, noisy, crinkly feeling traditionally associated with waterproof mattress protectors.
Because no parent wants their baby's bed to sound like a plastic bag every time they move.
4. A secure fit around the cot mattress
Fit is particularly important when you're choosing cot bedding.
Your fitted sheet should be appropriately sized for the mattress, fit snugly and stay securely in place.
Check the measurements of your cot mattress rather than assuming every cot sheet will fit every mattress.
NUMI cot sheets measure 132cm x 71cm x 22cm, so we recommend checking your mattress dimensions before ordering.
The fitted design and elastic help keep the sheet sitting securely around the mattress rather than loosely on top.
Always follow safe-sleep guidance applicable to your baby and ensure bedding is correctly fitted to your particular mattress.
5. Waterproofing that protects more than just the top
This is something that's easy to overlook.
Spills don't always land neatly in the middle of a mattress.
Liquid can travel towards the edges, which is why we designed NUMI's waterproof protection to extend down the sides of the fitted sheet, rather than protecting only the flat sleeping surface.
It's a small design detail that can make a big difference when you're dealing with real-life mess.
6. Something that can handle regular washing
Baby bedding gets washed.
A lot.
Leaking nappies, milk, dribble and sickness are all part of life with little ones, so your cot sheet shouldn't be something you're afraid to put through the wash.
Before buying, always check the care instructions.
NUMI waterproof sheets can be machine washed below 40°C and line dried in the shade or tumble dried on low. Avoid bleach, soaking, dry cleaning and ironing to help care for the waterproof layer.
And we'd strongly recommend owning more than one.
Which brings us to...
7. Have a second waterproof cot sheet ready
This might be our favourite piece of advice.
One on the cot. One clean one waiting.
When something happens overnight, the last thing you want to do is start washing and drying bedding before your little one can go back to sleep.
With two waterproof fitted sheets, you can simply remove the wet or dirty sheet and replace it with the clean one.
Then deal with the washing in the morning.
Future-you will be very grateful.
8. Look at what the sheet is made from
If materials matter to you, don't stop at the word "organic" on the front of the packaging.
Look for recognised certifications and check exactly what part of the product they apply to.
NUMI uses GOTS-certified organic cotton, and our bedding is also OEKO-TEX certified.
We chose our materials deliberately because we wanted NUMI to solve a practical problem without compromising on the feel or quality of the bedding.
9. Practical doesn't have to mean boring
This was a big one for us.
So much waterproof children's bedding looks exactly like... waterproof children's bedding.
We didn't want to choose between protecting the mattress and creating a beautiful room.
Our NUMI prints begin as hand-painted designs before becoming the finished patterns you see on our sheets.
Because a waterproof cot sheet is still a fitted sheet. It's going to be one of the most visible parts of your nursery.
It may as well be one you actually love.
So, what makes a good waterproof cot sheet?
Ultimately, we'd look for three things:
Comfort. Protection. Practicality.
It should feel soft enough for your little one to sleep on every night, provide reliable waterproof protection for the mattress underneath and be easy enough to wash and change that it actually makes your life easier.
That's exactly what we wanted when we created NUMI.
A beautiful organic cotton fitted sheet with the mattress protection already built in.
Waterproof. And cute.
Turns out, you can have both.
