Waterproof Fitted Sheets vs Mattress Protectors: What’s the Difference?
If you have a little one, you probably already know the drill: mattress protector first, fitted sheet on top, and hope everything stays where it should when spills, toilet-training accidents or middle-of-the-night surprises happen.
But do you actually need both?
A waterproof fitted sheet combines the comfort of a fitted sheet with waterproof mattress protection in one layer. That means one less layer to put on the bed, one less thing to wash, and a much simpler bed change when you’re half asleep at 3am.
Here’s how waterproof fitted sheets and traditional mattress protectors compare — and what to look for when choosing bedding for your child.
What is a waterproof mattress protector?
A traditional waterproof mattress protector sits directly over the mattress and underneath your fitted sheet.
Its job is simple: create a barrier between spills or accidents and the mattress underneath.
For a child’s bed, the typical setup looks like this:
Mattress → waterproof mattress protector → fitted sheet
It works, but it also means buying, fitting, removing and washing two separate layers.
And when an accident happens in the middle of the night? Both layers may need to come off before you can remake the bed.
What is a waterproof fitted sheet?
A waterproof fitted sheet combines those two layers into one.
Instead of putting a mattress protector underneath a separate fitted sheet, the waterproof protection is built into the sheet itself.
So your setup becomes:
Mattress → waterproof fitted sheet
That was the idea behind NUMI.
As mums ourselves, we wanted children's bedding that was practical enough for real life but still looked beautiful in their rooms. Our waterproof fitted sheets combine soft organic cotton with a breathable waterproof layer, so you get a comfortable fitted sheet and mattress protection in one.
No separate protector required.
Waterproof fitted sheet vs mattress protector: which is better?
Both can help protect a mattress. The biggest difference is really how you want to make the bed.
With a traditional mattress protector, you're using two separate products. With a waterproof fitted sheet, you're combining those jobs into one.
For families dealing with toilet training, bedwetting, drink spills or the occasional tummy bug, having fewer layers can make washing and changing the bed much easier.
It can also mean less bedding to buy and store.
And because the waterproof protection is already part of the fitted sheet, you don't have to worry about a separate protector shifting or bunching underneath.
The 3am difference
This is where the two-in-one setup really starts to make sense.
When you're changing a child's bed at 3am, the last thing you want is a complicated bedding system.
One of our favourite tricks is to keep two waterproof fitted sheets ready to go.
When an accident happens, pull the wet sheet off, put the clean one on and get everyone back into bed.
That's it.
No stripping off a fitted sheet and then removing another mattress protector underneath it.
It's also why we offer bundles — because sometimes the most useful sheet you own is the clean one waiting in the cupboard.
Are waterproof fitted sheets comfortable to sleep on?
They should be.
One of the biggest complaints about traditional waterproof bedding is that it can feel plasticky, stiff or noisy.
A good waterproof fitted sheet should still feel like bedding — because that's exactly what your child is sleeping on.
NUMI sheets use 300 thread count GOTS-certified organic cotton with a breathable TPU waterproof layer. They're designed to feel soft against the skin without the crinkly feeling people often associate with waterproof mattress protection.
Because practical bedding doesn't need to look or feel practical.
What should you look for in waterproof kids' bedding?
Not all waterproof bedding is made the same, so there are a few things worth checking before buying.
Look at the fabric your child will actually be sleeping on. Natural fibres such as cotton can provide a softer, more familiar bedding feel.
Check how the waterproof barrier is constructed and whether the product is designed to be breathable.
Fit matters too. A fitted sheet needs to stay securely around the mattress, particularly with wriggly little sleepers.
And finally, consider how easy it will be to wash and remake the bed. Kids' bedding gets washed. A lot. It should be designed for real family life rather than just looking good on the bed.
What about toilet training and bedwetting?
A waterproof fitted sheet can be particularly useful during nighttime toilet training and periods of bedwetting because accidents don't necessarily mean your mattress has to be exposed.
It isn't about expecting accidents. It's about making them less stressful when they happen.
The same applies to babies and toddlers. Leaky nappies, bottles, water, little spills and sickness are all fairly normal parts of having small children.
Having waterproof protection already built into their bedding means there's one less thing to think about.
Don't forget the pillow
Mattresses aren't the only things that encounter spills.
Pillows can be surprisingly difficult to clean properly, which is why waterproof pillow protection can also be useful in children's rooms.
NUMI's waterproof pillowcases are made using fabric off-cuts from our sheets, helping protect pillows while making use of material that may otherwise have gone to waste.
Pairing a waterproof fitted sheet with a waterproof pillowcase gives you a simple protective setup without changing the overall look of the bed.
So, do you still need a mattress protector with a waterproof fitted sheet?
If your fitted sheet already provides the waterproof protection you need, you generally don't need to add another waterproof mattress protector underneath purely to achieve the same function.
That's the whole point of the two-in-one design.
For NUMI, we wanted to take something parents already had to buy — a fitted sheet — and make it work harder.
One fitted sheet. Waterproof protection built in.
Less layering. Less washing. Easier bed changes.
And hopefully, a little less chaos at 3am.
